The Central Arizona Project (CAP) delivers water from the Colorado River to Maricopa, Pinal and Pima counties, serving more than 5 million people, or more than 80% of the state’s population. CAP is a 336 mile diversion canal in Arizona in the Southern United States. The aqueduct diverts water from the Colorado River to the Bill Williams Wildlife Refuge south portion of Lake Havasu near Parker into central and southern Arizona. 

On August 16, 2021; because of ongoing drought and increasing population in Arizona, the federal government for the first time in history deemed the Colorado River having a water shortage. This declaration forced Arizona to reduce their water reliance on the Colorado River by 18% in 2022. 

On August 16, 2022 the federal government mandated Arizona to lose 21% of Colorado River water in 2023. 

Arizona is facing a water crisis. 

The candidates running for the Central Arizona Water Conservation District [CAWCD] will oversee the Central Arizona Project's water supply and how water will be allocated to help fix and prevent our water shortages. CAWCD is a special purpose taxing district referred to as a multi-county conservation district that is managed by a 15 member board who are elected from the three-county service area made up of Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal counties. This government entity was created for the purposes of establishing the delivery of Central Arizona Project water, repayment of CAP costs, and operation and maintenance of the CAP aqueduct. The board members serve alternating six years terms. 

The November 8, 2022 General Election ballot will have 5 seats open in Maricopa County for voters to consider. There are 14 candidates running for the position: Ylenia Aguilar, Alexandra Arboleda, Lisa Bullington, Alan Dulaney, Shelby Duplessis, Benjamin Graff, Jason Lundgren, Cory Mishkin, Amanda Monize, Donovan L. Neese, Jim Pederson, Karen Peters, Barbara A. Seago, and Daniel Cirignani Wood.
